Starmer, Trump Discuss Ukraine, Chagos Islands
According to a statement from the prime minister’s office, Starmer and Trump exchanged views on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, particularly in light of Russian attacks overnight.
Starmer described the Russian forces’ "fierce attacks" on Ukraine's critical infrastructure, including energy systems, as "particularly depraved," emphasizing the severity of the strikes amid temperatures falling below minus 20C (-4F).
Meanwhile, the White House confirmed on Tuesday that US special envoy Steve Witkoff, alongside Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, will participate in trilateral talks with Russia and Ukraine in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday.
Shifting to the matter of Diego Garcia within the Chagos Islands agreement, both leaders acknowledged the military base’s significant strategic value.
"The leaders agreed their governments would continue working closely to guarantee the future operation of the base and speak again soon," the statement added.
Earlier, parliamentary discussions on the UK’s transfer of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius had been postponed following objections from Trump.
The issue resurfaced after Trump criticized the agreement as "an act of great stupidity," drawing renewed attention to the Chagos Archipelago debate.
